Top of Europe: An Expedition to the Highest Mountain Hut in the Alps

Date: July 2022
Number of participants: 5
Goal: Spend the night at Capanna Margherita, the highest mountain hut in the Alps at 4,554 metres.
Five adventurers with one mission: spend the night at Capanna Margherita, the highest mountain hut in the Alps at 4,554 metres. In our opinion, one of the most breathtaking places in Europe.
We started in Alagna Valsesia, a mountain village that breathes mountaineering. From there, we gradually climbed higher to acclimatise to the altitude. Overnight stays in atmospheric mountain huts marked our way up: Zar Senni, a rustic farmhouse in the valley, Gabiet at 2,370 metres and Capanna Gnifetti at 3,600 metres.
Then came the grand finale: the climb to the summit, where Capanna Margherita has stood since 1887 on a spectacular rocky ridge, seemingly suspended two kilometres above the landscape below. Here, we experienced the most magical sunrise and sunset in the Alps.
On day five, we made our way back down. One last cup of coffee at Gnifetti, then home.
